This project is supported and connected through team members at three Partner Institutions:

The University of Winnipeg, located in downtown Winnipeg, on Treaty One territory in the heart of the Métis Nation, boasts a vibrant and diverse city core with a vital arts, culture, and heritage preservation scene including the nearby Aboriginal People’s Television Network (APTN), Plug-In Institute for Contemporary Art, CBC radio, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Manitoba Museum, the Manitoba Archives, Urban Shaman Contemporary Art, and numerous other artist and community-run centres. The UW also exists in close physical proximity to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and has a formal Memorandum of Understanding to work on joint projects with the museum (MOU 2011). Relevant research centres and programs affiliated with our scholarly networks and Collaborators at the UW include the Cultural Studies Research Group (led by Angela Failler), Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies, Centre for Research in Young People’s Texts and Cultures, Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning, the Oral History Centre and several Indigenous-focused academic programs, resource centres and partners including local assemblies and communities of First Nations, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, and Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre.

Concordia University sits in downtown Montréal, a city of museums, from elite, world-class institutions such as the Musee des Beaux Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art, to the innovative community-oriented Écomusée du fier monde, and a rich range of cultural history museums, like the McCord Museum, the historic house Chateau Ramesay, the Pointe-à-Callière Museum, and the Centre d’Histoire de Montréal, as well as the human-rights oriented Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre. Concordia also prides itself in having developed in the past ten years cutting edge Centres for work with research- creation (Centre for Ethnographic Research and Exhibition in the Aftermath of Violence [CEREV]; Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling; Centre for Sensory Studies; Concordia Centre for Technoculture, Art, and Games) and social justice issues (Montreal Institute for Genocide Studies; Centre for Human Relations and Community Studies). One of Concordia’s core objectives in its academic plan is to increase experiential learning and community engagement through participation in local, national, and international internships and other forms of applied learning, and to strengthen university-community partnerships.

Located in the national capital of Ottawa, Carleton University has access to cultural resources unparalleled in Canada. They include national cultural institutions, collections, and curators, including: the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of History (formerly Civilization), the Canadian War Museum, the Canadian Museum of Nature, the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology, the National Arts Centre, the House of Commons Heritage Collection, the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development’s Aboriginal Art Collection and Gallery, the Canada Council Art Bank, and Library and Archives Canada. A dynamic constellation of research centres and initiatives connects Carleton faculty and students to this myriad of resources, including the Curatorial Studies Program (launching in Fall 2015); the Centre for Public History; the University Art Gallery; the Curatorial Laboratory; the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies and its programs in Human Rights and in Child Studies; the School of Canadian Studies; the Hypertext and Hypermedia lab, a digital humanities research centre; and the Heritage Studies and Conservation Research Cluster. This project closely aligns with Carleton’s strategic integrated plan’s focus on “Sustainable Communities – Global Prosperity” and its mission of national and international academic leadership in research and teaching, social connectedness and collaboration to create knowledge for long-term impacts, and preparing students to be engaged as productive citizens in an increasingly diverse world.
